This year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about goal-setting frameworks for
goals_on_dw. Read Part 1: Introduction to Goal-Setting Frameworks, Part 2: The 1-3-5 Rule, Part 3: The 12-week Year, Part 4: ABCS (Achievable, Believable, Committed, Specific), Part 5: Backward Goal, Part 6: BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals), Part 7: BSQ (Think Big, Act Small, Move Quick), Part 8: CLEAR (Collaborative, Limited, Emotional, Appreciable, Refinable), Part 9: Goal Pyramid.
Part 9: Goal Pyramid
A Goal Pyramid consists of four levels. At the top is the Vision, a desired outcome or long-term goal. The next layer holds the Strategic Goals, key objectives that guide the path toward the Vision. Below that lie the Tactical Goals, the assignments of each team or department to support the Strategic goals and the methods for achieving those. The base layer concerns Actions, the daily tasks that advance the Tactical Goals.

This structure works well for a variety of purposes. It helps to plan a complicated campaign or project. It can explain things to new people. It aligns the members of a team, and departments within a larger institution. It shows how any given piece fits into the larger whole.
Begin with the Vision. Write down your highest aspirations for your company or project. Whittle down to a single focus. Make it as clear and compelling as possible.
Next, consider your Strategic Goals. Choose 3-5 major things that must be accomplished in order to reach the Vision. Everything else should route through one of these.
Move on to your Tactical Goals. Break down each Strategic Goal into actionable parts. Assign a part to each team or department. Consider what methods you will use to pursue your goals.
Finally, break down each Tactical Goal into Daily Tasks. Identify which processes, products, and measurements you need in order to achieve each Tactical Goal. Use these to create each day's schedule. This layer typically includes the most time-sensitive parts of the plan.
Check the alignment. Make sure that each level of the pyramid leads smoothly to the next. Look for gaps. Fill any that you find.
Review periodically. Set a weekly or monthly time to assess progress and priorities. Revise goals and tasks as needed. Mark milestones reached. Update the pyramid you go along.
