matsushima: why don't you teach your heart to feel (love love)

Inspired by the 20 for 2025 post, I thought I'd start a brainstorming thread! If you have goals/resolutions/hopes you want to share or if you need a little help coming up with ideas, please comment here.

It's past sunset here. I slept most of the day away after running a few errands in the morning. (I had charms to burn and charms to buy.)

I know we all want to begin as we mean to go on but I want to remind everyone that if January 1, 2025 was not perfect - if you resolved to change out of your pajamas every day but didn't even get out of bed, if your goal is to read 100 books this year but you were too tired by the time you got home, any little (or big) way you felt like you "failed" today - it's OK. Today does not have to be any more important than the other 364 days this year. It is not a sign of bad things to come if you, for example, dropped your crepe and got hot sugar butter all over yourself and your clothes and had to walk home covered in sticky goop. *ahem*

I have OCD and one of my "things" is significant dates. If you have similar anxieties and struggles, this is a reminder that today doesn't have to be perfect. If you're having a really rough start to your year, you can tell yourself that you're getting your bad luck out of the way early. You can pick a date and say "the year doesn't really start until [Tolkien Day (January 3), Epiphany/Three Kings Day (January 6), Earth's Rotation Day (January 8), Appreciate a Dragon Day (January 16), etc.]" to give yourself some slack.

Finally, don't forget that "good enough is good enough" and "perfect is the enemy of good."

Most people who like New Year's resolutions or other year-beginning goals will be setting them on December 31 or January 1. This post provides a place to share yours. If you have a single goal or a small cluster that fit in a paragraph or few, you can put them in a comment below this post. Longer lists or discussions should go on your own blog, with a link to that post and maybe a summary of your approach in a comment below. Scroll down for resources on goals.

life pie

matsushima: i am me the universe and you (another soul)

One of the tasks in The Artist's Way that resonated with me (even tho I've never finished the whole 12 weeks) was the "life pie" (sometimes called a "life wheel"). Basically, you chart out your life in terms of spirituality, exercise, play, work, romance(/adventure), and friends, and mark how fulfilled you feel in each area; closer to the middle means you're unfulfilled, on the outer edge of your chart means you're 100% happy. (In the book, Julia Cameron says you can switch out "romance" for "adventure" if that's more relevant to you.) Here's an example of someone's life pie.

Searching around, I also found someone else's life pie with different slices: parenting, spiritual, personal growth, business/career/studies, finance/wealth, health/fitness, social/friends, family, romance/love, and recreation/fun. This one includes "physical environment" while this one is set up differently (more readable, imho) and includes "diet" and "mindset."

This year, I plan to do a life wheel every month and watch the fluctuations: is an area consistently low? is something that was high suddenly dropping? where do I feel mostly content? Like I said, I like this activity.

I'm curious (and, OK, shamelessly looking for ideas about) what "slices" you would put on your life pie. When I recently did a (related but slightly different) self care activity, the areas that I identified were: creative, enrichment, interpersonal, spiritual, embodiment, career, and rest.

Disclaimer: I don't endorse (or know anything about) any of these sites. I was only sharing examples of life pies/life wheels.

There are all kinds of reading challenges and goals that people like to do. Some are individual, others are group events. Some are all year, others shorter. Some have speculative fiction themes, others are ordinary. They span a great many different formats including but not limited to fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and fanfic. Here are some for your inspiration. On Dreamwidth, see communities for books.

You can pick whichever challenge(s) you want to set as a goal in 2025 and reply with a comment. Below the list of challenges is a short form for listing which you have chosen. Make a post in your blog like "I signed up for the Reading challenge in [community profile] goals_on_dw" -- or list the specific challenge if you're doing an official one somewhere else instead of a personal one here. Then make a tag for it like "Reading Challenge" and put that on the post; it should stick that way. Check your Interests page to see if you have Reading, Fiction, Meta, Science Fiction, Fanfic, etc. listed there, which helps people find you. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

For printables to track your progress, see Books & Reading in Thematic Trackers or Challenges by Numbers.

See also the Fannish 50 challenge, which simply aims to post fifty entries on any topic in fandom. If you want to review every book you read all year, or compile a list of favorite fanfics you've found, go for it. You can even double-count anything that applies to two or more goals, e.g. [community profile] 50books_poc and Fannish 50.

Do you know of any other reading challenges in 2025? Share a link so they can be added to the list of options.

This page offers links to resolutions and goals for single people, which also works for people who belong to a couple or group but like doing things alone. They're also good if you are surrounded by other people and need to make time for yourself. Many are things that you don't need anyone else's permission or participation for, you can just do them. There are separate sections that don't involve romance and about looking for love. Pick whichever section appeals to you or browse both.

I like making lists of New Year's resolutions. (See my post for 2024 resolutions.) I especially like ones with a limited timeframe rather than year-long, because it feeds accomplishment earlier. It also prevents trying to cram everything into January and/or December. I tried searching for seasonal ones but couldn't find any. So I'm making my own list of ideas below.

Seasonal activities help with timebinding, both passing on knowledge and marking the orderly passage of time. Note that some of these goals come in sets, like crafts or sports. You can stick with one type of goal and change its theme by season, or mix and match different things to make a set that covers the year. Here are some ideas for seasonal goal setting.

New Year's resolutions, or other goals, can be set on a monthly scale. A one-month goal gives a clear target and a sense of accomplishment that balances between short and long term. It's a great way to manage medium-size projects that take a while to complete but don't necessarily need to remain ongoing goals, or at least not at the same level of intensity. If you get bored easily, this also lets you accomplish a year's worth of goal work by choosing a sequence of different monthly ones.

One-Week Resolutions

This time of year, I usually write something about New Year's resolutions. Here I'm going to cover the idea of one-week resolutions. If you're daunted by the idea of longer-term resolutions, but unsatisfied by one-day resolutions, then one week is a timeframe worth exploring. Let's look at some ideas...

While searching for inspiration online, I found this gem of advice:
"Don’t commit to doing something for a year if you haven’t done it for a week."

Many New Year's resolutions require an ongoing commitment of time, energy, and/or other resources. This can be challenging to sustain. 92% of New Year’s resolutions fail, most of them within a couple of weeks.

However, there's a way around this. Make some resolutions that you can complete in one day. You can broaden this to any one-time activity if you like: a weekend workshop, a housecleaning week, a two-week vacation, etc. If you're really swamped, you could even shrink it down to one-hour resolutions. Do what works for you, based on the resources you have and goals you hope to accomplish.

Here are some ideas for one-day resolutions. Some of these need no further attention once complete. Others are small, concrete steps toward further progress.

Chore Charts

Chore Charts
You can use chore charts to organize housework, yardwork, and so on. Anything that's basically a bunch of little subtasks can be set up this way. These work for one person to track a string of things, or for a group of people to track who is responsible for what and which things have already been done. There are styles for all ages and many contexts. If you want to connect a reward system, consider having a board or basket with lots of perks to claim, and then getting first pick of those per day / week / whatever becomes an incentive to complete chores promptly. All this stuff can help with goals related to completing various types of chores consistently or at certain times, or with goals related to a peaceful family.

Many people use recurring posts in their blogs to track things, boost activity, network, or promote stuff they care about. If you have a blog-related goal like "Community Thursday" or "Post at least once a week," or you like to track your resolutions in your blog (such as "words written this month," then you can probably meet that with some sort of recurring post. You may wish to write yours on a desktop calendar or program them into an app so that you remember to do them.

Some of these lists will be thematic (e.g. fun resolutions, long-term goals), some will serve specific audiences (e.g. resolutions for writers, family goals), some will have a certain timeframe (e.g. February resolutions, goals for 2025), and so on. Hopefully this will make it easier for people to find things they want.
