ysabetwordsmith: Text says New Year Resolutions on notebook (resolutions)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith posting in [community profile] goals_on_dw
New Year's resolutions, or other goals, can be set on a monthly scale. A one-month goal gives a clear target and a sense of accomplishment that balances between short and long term. It's a great way to manage medium-size projects that take a while to complete but don't necessarily need to remain ongoing goals, or at least not at the same level of intensity. If you get bored easily, this also lets you accomplish a year's worth of goal work by choosing a sequence of different monthly ones.

If you like the idea of New Year's resolutions, but you struggle to keep up with year-long goals -- or you complete most of them in January and then don't have much except the long-term goals through the rest of the year -- then you can use monthly goals to resolve those issues. You will always have something to do, but it will keep changing regularly, so you don't burn out on any one thing.

Monthly goals also offer a great way to playtest new ideas. Think of it like dating -- if you don't feel sparks, you can move on and date something new! Does this exercise feel good to you? Do you like this hobby? Does this capsule wardrobe work for you? Can you use this new cookware or cuisine well enough to add it to your regular repertoire? If yes, you can consider whether it's done enough, or needs a new stage, at the end of the month. If it didn't work, you can ditch it and do something else -- but you still met your goal, because the testing phase was only one month! \o/

Remember that all goal or resolution formats work for some people, or they wouldn't get recommended; but no one format works for everyone. This is because people have different minds and bodies. Don't pick on yourself or others if a given approach proves useless or even counterproductive. Try different things until you find some strategies that work for you, and encourage others to keep exploring too.

Monthly Goals to Try Out

* Read books on a given theme. Browse some reading lists for children, adults, or assorted ages. This is a great way to branch out in fiction or nonfiction. You might join a book club (online or in person), get a library card, search for Little Free Libraries, join BookCrossing, or explore different bookstores as part of your quest.

* Learn a new piece of cookware. Here is some kitchen equipment you could try. You can buy a new one, or dig out one that's gathering dust on a shelf. Make a plan to look up recipes for it and use it several times, then decide whether or not you like it. If you don't, get rid of the thing! You can use that space to store something more useful, and someone else can try the the cookware.

* Study a new cuisine. Here are some cuisines you could explore. Read about its home culture, browse lists of its key ingredients, find some recipes, and buy a few new things. Make a plan to cook several recipes.

* Taste test healthy foods. Browse a list of delicious options. You don't have to keep any given one. If you try a bunch of new things, it is likely you'll discover some you love. You may also discover that you like a healthier version of an old favorite more than the original! I will probably never make plain ground beef filling/topping again, after learning how much better it is with chopped onions and/or mushrooms mixed in. Explore healthy comfort foods. Understand that people often need to try a new food many times before deciding whether or not they like it. That's normal. It's okay to play with your food! Using all your senses to explore new foods can make them more appealing, and might give you ideas for what else to do with them.

* Date a new type of exercise. You might like to buy an affordable piece of gym equipment and/or a new book to support your explorations. It isn't important to be a buff athlete or to marry an exercise for the rest of your life. Just try out some new moves.

* Date a new hobby. Here are some supplies and books for you to explore. No money? No problem! Consider cheap or free hobbies. Remember that when you're dating a new hobby, you don't want to spend a ton of money on it, just buy a few things to get started. For instance, here are some ideas for learning art on the cheap.

* Explore your territory. This can be a rural area, town, or neighborhood. Seek out shops and services you might enjoy. Are there restaurants you haven't tried? Go eat there!

* Study your local wildlife. Learn how to identify various plants, birds, and other animals. There are books and apps to help.

* Try bare-bones language learning. Here are some popular language apps and websites. In one month you could take a traveler's course in a world language, learn "retail Spanish," or acquire emergency vocabulary for several languages. Check on the most-used languages after the prevailing language in your area for ideas, or look at the world and supra-regional languages. Esperanto is the language of world peace, good for making friends around the globe. Sign language such as ASL is another excellent bet because you can use it when your mouth/voice isn't working or conditions are too noisy for speech. Why limit yourself to natural, human languages? Study Láadan, Klingon, or Sindarin. Learn about animal communication. Explore how to build a model language.

* Write some apps. 30 Apps in 30 Days is pretty nuts (unless you are a super-intellect), but 30 days of learning to code apps is much more doable. Consider that apps routinely exclude or abuse women, people of color, the disabled, and other disadvantaged groups. If you write apps for underserved audiences, you will make the world a better place, make a name for yourself as a developer, and enjoy a market with minimal competition. \o/
